Street Maintenance

The City of Fort Collins' streets and transportation network are our community's largest public asset — and one of the most visible. Like the roof on a house, streets wear down over time and need regular upkeep to stay safe and functional. That's where the Street Maintenance Program (SMP) comes in.

The SMP is the City's proactive approach to keeping streets, sidewalks, curbs, signs and signals in good working order. By investing in timely maintenance, we extend the life of our roads and reduce the need for expensive repairs later.

2024 Street Maintenance By the Numbers

A quick look at what the SMP accomplished in 2024, by the numbers.

Each year the SMP includes a mix of:

  • Asphalt resurfacing and patching
  • Sidewalk, curb and gutter repairs
  • ADA-accessible ramp upgrades
  • Preventive treatments (like slurry seal, chip seal, and overlays)
  • Bridge and median upkeep

Our goal is to apply the right treatment at the right time, based on detailed inspections and pavement condition scores.

Why Street Maintenance Matters

Roads naturally deteriorate over time due to traffic, weather and seasonal freeze-thaw cycles. The earlier we intervene, the more cost-effective the fix. Preventive treatments like crack seal and slurry seal help us avoid major reconstruction and keep roads in good shape longer.

The SMP continues to receive support from Fort Collins voters. In November 2024, voters approved a 20-year extension of the 1/4-Cent Street Maintenance Tax, continuing dedicated funding through 2045. This long-standing community investment helps us plan ahead and deliver reliable, well-maintained infrastructure.

Tips for Residents During Construction

  • We'll always place No Parking signs at least 24 hours in advance of upcoming street or sidewalk work
  • Most SMP maintenance occurs Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m.
