The City of Fort Collins Forestry Division maintains more than 61,000 trees along streets and in parks, cemeteries, golf courses and other City properties. Our objective is to sustain a safe, healthy and resilient urban forest through frequent and sound tree management practices.

Fort Collins is proud to be designated an official Tree City, an annual Arbor Day Foundation program that recognizes cities for their commitment to growing greener community. 

Arborists

The City of Fort Collins Forestry Division grants and manages licenses for arborists and third-party businesses that perform tree removal, pruning, cutting and other tasks on trees within Fort Collins.

Community Resources

Maintaining our community's trees is crucial to taking care of the place we call home. From planting approved trees suitable to Fort Collins’ climate to doing your part to mitigate invasive species, there are many ways you can contribute to keeping our urban forest vibrant and healthy!

Insects and Diseases

Urban environments cause lots of stress on trees, making them vulnerable to diseases and insect attacks. The Fort Collins Forestry Division actively monitors and manages these threats to our urban forest, but there are several ways you can also help to protect our trees.

Tribute Trees

Giving to City of Fort Collins Parks is a meaningful way to commemorate a special event, honor a loved one or show your dedication to our community.

Request Tree Pruning or Removal

To report public tree concerns, contact the Forestry Division office at 970-221-6660 or fill out this pruning/removal request form.

Request a Street Tree

At your request, the Forestry Division can plant a free 2-inch caliper tree between the curb and sidewalk adjacent to your property.

Request a Commercial Tree Removal Permit

The City requires a tree removal permit for any tree 15 inches or greater DBH (diameter at breast height) located on commercial properties.

Urban Forest Strategic Plan

Rooted in Community, the City’s first-ever Urban Forest Strategic Plan, was adopted by City Council in 2025. The plan is a comprehensive guide for the management, protection and improvement of Fort Collins’ urban forest. It summarizes the state of the City’s urban forest and provides recommendations to ensure that the urban forest remains healthy and vibrant into the future.
