The City of Fort Collins manages its budget through a two-year cycle with revisions to the second year as needed.
The City Manager and City Council can adjust the second year of the budget based on the City's finances or other needs. The City Charter requires each fiscal year to have its own spending approval, even in a two-year budget.
Budget revisions help ensure funding goes to the City's most important programs and services during budget shortfalls or when finances are tight. The City may reduce funding for lower priority programs to keep enough funds available for vital City services.
On Nov. 18, 2025, upon Second Reading, City Council adopted Ordinance No. 186, 2025 relating to the annual appropriations and amending the budget for the fiscal year beginning Jan. 1, 2026 and ending Dec. 31, 2026.
City Council adopted the 2025-2026 budget on Nov. 19, 2024. This budget supports the 2024-2026 Council Priorities and the 2024 Strategic Plan. The adopted budget includes City Council changes to the recommended budget.
The City's budget is part of a two-year process that starts with updating the Strategic Plan. The plan guides funding choices in the budget. Community input helps set the City's priorities throughout both years.
