The Explorer is a free annual publication to help you find fun and learning in nature. Inside, there is community-submitted art and writing, self-guided activities, helpful information, and a full list of free events for all ages. The Explorer is released every June — just in time for summer adventures!

If you are with a group, camp or daycare, check out our DIY Activities below as an alternative to the group attending Explorer activities. You can request an activity for your group by contacting the Natural Areas Department. This helps keep group sizes manageable so everyone has a better experience. If you are visiting on your own and are not part of a Natural Areas Department activity, and your group has more than 15 people, you’ll need a free permit. You can apply for a free special use permit here.

Fourth Grade: A Slice of Prairie Pie

Students will learn about the connections between multiple parts of local prairie ecosystems.

Fourth Grade: Past Lives on the Prairie

Fifth Grade: Energy Flows in Nature
