Winter Exploration at Running Deer Natural Area

07 Feb 2026 Learn about the different ways that animals survive through the winter's scarcity of food; migrate, hibernate, or staying active. Naturalist Rob Pickett shares some of the fascinating methods animals have evolved to stay alive. The hike will be about 3 miles long over relatively flat terrain.

Eagle Watch

07 Feb 2026 Bald eagles from the north make Fort Collins their winter home. They spend nights in communal roosts in cottonwood trees near the reservoir. Volunteer Naturalists are stationed at the viewing pier and explain the eagles’ natural history and help visitors view them through spotting scopes and binoculars.

Exhibition: Kristy Deetz: Disrupted Gardens

11 Feb 2026 The exhibit features a series of hyper-realistic acrylic paintings that imagine a future where nature and artificial intelligence respond to pollution and climate change by reshaping the Earth and populating it with new, often evolving creatures. Kristy calls these creatures Specimens and creates them as small sculptures that she photographs outdoors to use as the basis for each painting.
