4. Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

I don't live in Fort Collins. Can I use the Timberline Recycling Center?

You do not have to live in Fort Collins to use the center. However, there may be a recycling option closer to home. Visit our A-Z List to search for disposal options or check with your local trash hauler to see if they collect recyclables or have a drop-off center nearby.

Is the Timberline Recycling Center profitable?

City of Fort Collins funds the center's operations. Revenue from selling recyclables offsets some costs. The market value of recyclables changes over time and has never been enough to pay for operations. The City funds this service for the community — it is not a money-making facility.

Everyday Recyclables Yard

What are everyday recyclables?

Everyday recyclables are items you use every day that can go in your curbside recycling bin. They include bottles, cans, cardboard, glass, paperboard and paper.

Should I crush or smash containers like aluminum cans, cartons and milk jugs before recycling them?

No! Do not crush or flatten items you put in containers at the center or in your home recycling bin. Machinery at the sorting facility sorts containers in their original shape. Flattened containers may not sort correctly and could make recycling harder, possibly leading to the item not being recycled.

Why isn't plastic foam accepted at the Timberline Recycling Center?

Plastic form or expanded polystyrene, sometimes called Styrofoam, is mostly air. It is not cost-effective to transport it to a remanufacturing facility unless it is first crushed and condensed to remove the air. Fort Collins does not have the machinery needed to "densify" Styrofoam, so it cannot be collected locally.
For reuse and disposal options for plastic foam, visit our A-Z List.

What's the difference between the White Office Paper Container and the Mixed Paper Container?

There are two containers in the Everyday Recyclables Yard that accept paper.

The White Office Paper Container is for:

  • White office paper (black or colored ink is ok)
  • White envelopes (windows accepted)
  • Shredded white paper (loose)

White paper is high-quality material with a higher market value. It can be made into higher-quality products (like being made back into white paper instead of bathroom tissue). By recycling your white paper in the White Office Paper Container, you help strengthen our recycling system and allow that material to be "high graded."

The Mixed Paper Container is for all other paper products, including magazines, junk mail, newspaper and telephone books, along with paperboard containers like cereal boxes and paper towel rolls. This material is still worth recycling but has a different value and different markets than white paper.

Do I have to unload my own recyclables?

When you visit the Everyday Recyclables Yard, you sort and unload your own recyclables. Volunteers can help if you need assistance.

Hard-to-Recycle Materials Yard

What is a hard-to-recycle material?

A hard-to-recycle material is an item that can be recycled, just not in your curbside recycling bin.

Why is there a $5 entry fee?

The $5 entry fee helps offset costs for collecting, handling, transporting and processing accepted items.

Do I have to unload my own hard-to-recycle materials?

You unload your own materials in the Hard-to-Recycle Materials Yard. Staff can show you where to drop off materials, but you unload them yourself. No extra unloading equipment is available.

Will you pick up my large item for recycling?

The Timberline Recycling Center does not offer pick-up services.

Can I bring my refrigerator, air conditioner or freezer to the Hard-to-Recycle Yard

We do not accept items with freon like refrigerators, air conditioners or freezers. Items with freon must be disposed of at the special locations.

Can I bring automotive fluids other than motor oil and antifreeze to the Timberline Recycling Center?

The only automotive fluids accepted at the Hard-to-Recycle Yard are motor oil and antifreeze. All other automotive fluids should be disposed of at the special locations.

Can commercial customers use the Hard-to-Recycle Materials Yard?

Yes! Commercial customers are welcome at both the Everyday Recyclables Yard and Hard-to-Recycle Materials Yard. However, extra fees and drop-off limits apply for some items. Commercial customers cannot bring batteries to the center. They should use the Larimer County Business Hazardous Waste Program.
