Everyday Biking Tips

Rules of the Road

  • Ride with traffic

  • Yield to pedestrians
  • Use lights and reflectors at night
  • Signal turns and stops
  • Take the lane if needed
  • Don’t ride between cars
  • Watch for car doors
  • Share trails, pass on the left, stay under 15 mph

Helmet Fit Tips

  • Level and two fingers above eyebrows
  • Straps form a “V” under ears
  • Snug chin strap

Need a helmet? Contact FC Moves for a free one.

Dismount Zones

Please walk your bike where Dismount Zone signs are posted — like Downtown and Colorado State University (CSU) campus areas.

Types of Bike Infrastructure in Fort Collins

  • Sharrows
  • Buffered Bike Lanes
  • Two-Way Protected Lanes
  • Contraflow Bike Lanes
  • Separated Bike Lanes
  • Shared Bike/Ped Signal Crossings
  • Advisory Bike Lanes
  • Two-Stage Turn Boxes

Example: Advisory Lane (Pitkin Street)

Cars share the center lane and may use bike lanes to pass. Cyclists ride in the dashed lanes.

Example: Two-Stage Turn Box (Intersection of Mulberry and Taft Hill)

Two-Stage Turn Boxes make it easier and safer for bike users to turn left at major intersections. Instead of actually getting into the left turn lane, stay in bike lanes instead:

  1. When the light turns green, proceed through the intersection
  2. Stop in the green box at the corner of the intersection, turning to wait at the red light on the road you're turning onto
  3. Proceed when light turns green

Crossing Types

Type How It Works What Drivers Should Do Where You'll See It
Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) Fast flashing lights when activated Yield Busy trail and mid-block crossings
HAWK Flashes yellow then turns solid red Stop High-speed roads
Flashing Beacon Single flashing light Slow down Schools zones, neighborhood crossings
Trail Crossing Sign Flashes with button press or detection Yield Trail-road intersections
In-Pavement Lights Flashing lights embedded in the road Yield Busy mid-block crossings
