City of Fort Collins to Offer Low-Cost Trees to Residents

The City of Fort Collins is offering residents an affordable way to grow the urban forest through the annual Rooted in Community Tree Sale. This August, 1,000 locally grown trees will be available for the community to purchase for $25 each.
Starting at 8 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 24, residents within Fort Collins’ Growth Management Area (GMA) can purchase up to two trees per household. Trees are available on a first-come, first-served basis and are expected to sell quickly. Purchases will be made online using WebTrac, the City’s online recreation program registration tool, and residents are encouraged to create an online account ahead of the sale to ensure a smooth checkout process. “Planting trees is a great way to get residents involved in building a healthier, resilient urban forest in Fort Collins,” says Christine Holtz, Senior Forestry Specialist. “This program not only offers low-cost trees to folks, it also supports the well-being of both our tree canopy and our community.”
This year’s tree offerings include climate-appropriate species such as Ohio buckeye 'Jimmy K.', fruitless crabapple, Haralson apple and a variety of oaks and elms, as well as other shade, ornamental and fruit trees grown locally by Fort Collins Wholesale Nursery.
Pickup for purchased trees will take place on Saturday, Sept. 12 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at Hoffman Mill. This year, trees must be picked up on Saturday, Sept. 12. If residents are unable to pick up their tree, they may send someone else to pick up their purchase. Any trees not picked up on Sept. 12 will be donated.

The Rooted in Community Tree Sale (formerly known as the Community Canopy Program) is supported by the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas’ Nature in the City program in partnership with the City’s Forestry Division. Together, they aim to expand Fort Collins’ urban forest, which provides essential environmental and community benefits including releasing oxygen, capturing air pollutants and carbon dioxide, filtering and reducing stormwater runoff, reducing energy demand, and cooling down ambient temperatures via shade. Additionally, they sustain habitat for birds and other wildlife and contribute greatly to human and community health.
