Over the next several months, temporary detention space within the Fort Collins Police (FCPS) building will be reconstructed into a shared workspace for the FCPS Mental Health Response Team (MHRT) and the Homeless Outreach and Proactive Engagement (HOPE) team. This project represents an important investment in the FCPS mission — Safety and Service for ALL — and is a more effective use of existing building space.

The current detention area encompasses a large section of the lower level of the FCPS building and has not been used for its current design for several years. Remodeling and repurposing this area into an operational hub for the MHRT and HOPE teams will foster collaboration and strengthen their shared mission and service to the community. This new space will allow the teams to collaborate in delivering appropriate care and resources that address the unique needs of individuals in our community, while enhancing safety for those individuals, responding officers and the broader community.

The renovation is made possible through a generous contribution from the Woodward Charitable Trust, and began January 19, 2026. Completion is anticipated in May, 2026. Police services will remain fully operational throughout the project.

“This renovation reflects our focus on efficient operations, enhanced public service, and, of course, community partnerships,” said FCPS Chief of Police, Jeff Swoboda. “Once completed, the new space will modernize our facility and better support coordinated responses to complex community needs.”

“The Woodward Charitable Trust is honored to support the re-envisioning of the existing space within the police services building,” shared Kody Braisted, Woodward Charitable Trust President. “Our ongoing commitment to support the communities where Woodward is located is steadfast. Partnering with FCPS to enable a more coordinated approach across these dedicated teams aligns perfectly with the priorities of the Trust.”
