The ice rink at the Edora Pool Ice Center (EPIC) will be closed through the end of business Thursday, Jan. 29 following a collision in which a Zamboni driver was injured.
Shortly after noon on Tuesday, Jan. 27, a collision occurred when the vehicle backed into a partially open overhead door. The driver was transported to an area hospital by emergency services and later died. No other staff or EPIC visitors were injured.
“This is a tragic incident, and we are devastated at the loss of our colleague,” said City Manager Kelly DiMartino. “Our hearts go out to everyone affected and we are working to support their loved ones and coworkers.”
The City is conducting a thorough review to better understand the circumstances surrounding the event and to review safety policies and practices.“We remain committed to the safety and security of City staff and every member of our community,” said DiMartino. “This pause in our ice rink operations is out of an abundance of caution, to allow for staff support, and to provide time and space to understand the circumstances surrounding the event.”
Out of respect for the ongoing investigation and those impacted, the City is not naming the employee at this time.
