Fort Collins Launches New Bike Registration System

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The City of Fort Collins is transitioning its longtime in-house bike registration system to Bike Index, a nationally recognized bicycle registration database used by thousands of communities and universities worldwide. The change coincides with Colorado State University’s (CSU’s) migration to Bike Index, creating a unified, community-wide platform for bike and mobility device registration.

The new Fort Collins Bike Index registration form is now online at Bike Registration. Existing bikes registered with the City are being automatically migrated into the new system for owners who provided an email address; those who registered with only a phone number will be contacted directly for assistance.

This move to Bike Index modernizes Fort Collins’ bike registration system and makes it easier for people to protect their bikes and scooters,” City of Fort Collins Active Modes Specialist Lauren Nagle said. “By aligning with CSU and local bike shops, we’re creating a seamless system that works across the entire community.”

Key updates include:

• Expanded registration: For the first time, residents may register e-scooters, e-skateboards, and other mobility devices in addition to bikes.
• Self-serve, free registration: Fort Collins residents can register themselves on Bike Index at any time, for free, without needing to rely on City staff.
• Integration with bike shops: Bike Index connects with point-of-sale systems at local bike shops, streamlining the registration process. Bike shop support for registration will be rolling out over the next several months.
• City–CSU coordination: CSU students, staff and faculty should register through CSU’s Bike Index portal to allow for regular bike parking on campus. For off-campus theft or recovery, the City can still access CSU’s database.
• Automatic transition for existing registrants: The City’s previous bike registration system has been migrated to the City’s new registration system in Bike Index. Those who registered in the old system are already in the new one.

Community members can learn more and register their bikes at the City's Transportation Projects Fair on Friday, Feb. 6 from 6-9 p.m. at The Center for Creativity (200 Mathews St.).
