Hyphens and Hemispheres: The Places We Come From

"These collaborative portraits combine poetry by the participants with photography by Brigid McAuliffe, featuring individuals from 38 different countries who now call Fort Collins home—encompassing both recent arrivals and long-time community members. The project aims to celebrate local diversity that often goes unseen on the surface. Our city is enriched by an incredible variety of backgrounds, and this exhibition highlights global voices who contribute to the vibrancy of our shared community. Visually, the varying shades of blues, greens, and browns in the backgrounds symbolize the ways we move through the world, traversing land, sky, and water."

About the photographer:

"Brigid McAuliffe is an artist and educator who views collaborative, participatory art as a transformative force—one that enriches lives, fosters deeper connections, and strengthens communities. Since 2012, Brigid has served as the director and co-founder of Picture Me Here, an arts and storytelling program for refugees and immigrants. Her film Small Bites about food producers in Western Colorado was featured on PBS. Her academic career includes her current role as an instructor and coordinator for Colorado State University’s Arts Management program, alongside past teaching positions at the University of Colorado Denver, Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design, and as a visiting professor at Indiana University South Bend. She’s presented her work internationally and has also curated Picture Me Here exhibitions across the U.S. and Nepal. Brigid holds an MFA in Emerging Digital Practices from the University of Denver and a BFA in Photography from Colorado State University. Outside of her professional work, she enjoys adventures with family, traveling, hiking, crafting, and making music."
